Second-ranked host Indianapolis Cathedral toppled top-ranked Carmel, 4-1, in a battle of the state’s 1 vs. 2 girls tennis programs April 27.
Coach Mark Noe’s Fighting Irish swept the singles matches and also captured No. 2 doubles as each match went straight sets. The No. 1 doubles tandem of Susie Chen and Sarah Rodefeld was the lone victor for Carmel, which played without two varsity starters.
“It was a great match even without our No. 1 and No. 3 varsity players,” said Carmel coach Sharon Rosenburgh. “It was a great team effort, and I am very proud of the team’s efforts.
“Alyson (Bundy) and Charu (Dwedvi) filled in like experienced varsity players – the team was very proud of them.”
The Irish (5-0), who defeated No. 14 Floyd Central for the eighth-team Crawfordsville Invitational crown this past Saturday one day after slipping past No. 5 South Bend St Joseph’s 3-2, will next travel to No. 15 Brebeuf for an April 28 match before a May 1 trip to the Delta Invitational.
The Greyhounds (6-1), fresh off a decisive weekend victory at their own eighth-team invitational that featured six ranked schools, will host No. 22 rival North Central (Indianapolis) April 29 before participating in Saturday’s Merrillville Invitational.
The Carmel duo who did not play were being disciplined for a pair of team violations after arriving 45 minutes late to Saturday’s Carmel Invite and walking out of practice Monday.
The results (thank you, Sharon Rosenburgh!):
Singles
No. 1 Kate Winningham (Cathedral) def. Mikaela Carlson 6-4, 6-2
No. 2 Cassie Wajtalik (Cathedral) def. Alyson Bundy 6-0, 6-1
No. 3 Madison Rothberger (Cathedral) def. Charu Dwedvi 6-0, 6-2
Doubles
No. 1 Susie Chen/Sarah Rodefeld (Carmel) def. Melissa Adams/Megan Fry 6-1, 6-2
No. 2 Caroline Eckhart/Maggie Edwards (Cathedral) def. Annika Carlson/Olivia Trancik 6-3, 7-6(4)
